Grades
1-8
In the elementary grades, children are still discovering
and being discovered. It is in these years that we come
to see what inspires a particular child, what natural talents
he/she has. To this end, we emphasize breadth as well as
depth, including subjects like drama, art, and literature – right from grade one.
By offering a stimulating but well-rounded program, we allow each individual
child to discover his/her interests and talents, and to reach his/her potential.
Over time, we invariably notice certain children leaning towards specific classes
or activities, and we use this unfolding knowledge to help children succeed even
in areas they are not naturally drawn to, and to inspire them to excel in areas
of natural strength.
One way we encourage individual development is by allowing students to progress
at their own pace in the core academic areas. With this approach, it is not unusual
for children to be working two or more grades above their level in one or more
subjects. Individualization also allows us to accommodate a student who may need
a little more practice to master a particular skill or concept. By allowing children
to work at their own pace in core academic areas, we preserve and build their
academic confidence. Whatever challenges each child faces, he/she can readily
handle.
The elementary years are also a time for developing the skills needed for future
academic success. It is in these years that teachers need to lead children in
developing helpful routines and work habits, to allow each child to see him/herself
as capable of success, and to ensure that each child retains the enthusiasm that
he/she came by so naturally as a kindergartner.
