Kindergarten
As parents do their best to keep up, four- and five-year-olds
seem to be in tireless pursuit of answers to just about everything.
They ask why; they seem to be always on the move looking… touching… trying.
Our kindergarten program is designed to make use of this boundless energy by
balancing free-play and student-directed activities with teacher-directed, focused
learning activities.
Teachers emphasize the development of good social skills, and they establish
helpful routines. Our kindergarten program is all about making friends, learning
to share and take turns, and taking care of surroundings. And the traditions
of Kindergarten – the arts and crafts, the stories and songs, the puppets,
the lacing boards, the building blocks, and the child-sized kitchen – all
have an important role at this age, too.
In addition to the routines and traditions we associate with Kindergarten, Laurel
Academy also offers an individualized, enriched learning component in which children
learn to print the letters of the alphabet, their names, and other simple words,
too; they learn to count, and to add and subtract; and they learn to read one-on-one.
Teachers also present hands-on activities related to science and history themes,
and the children are introduced to basic conversational French through songs
and games.
Our kindergarten provides a well-rounded combination of fun and learning, a program
that seeks to answer children’s questions about the fascinating world they
are only beginning to discover, a program that encourages them to keep looking,
touching, and trying.
