On Monday, April 7 the Grades 3, 4 and 5 classes had a perfect sunny, warm day to take a trip to the sugar bush at the Kortright Centre. We hiked through the forest to see how the pioneers made maple syrup and then we visited a modern sugar shack. We had a sample of the syrup made the old fashioned way. The perfect end to our trip was a pancake lunch with guess what? -maple syrup. We really enjoyed being out in the fresh air, lapping up the sunshine after our long, cold, snowy winter.

On February 13, the Grade 1,2 and 3 classes went to the Hummingbird Centre to watch the musical drama of Flat Stanley. We went on the Funky Fun Bus which was multi-coloured. At first, we were afraid that we were going to be late for the performance because the bus wouldn’t start, however, we arrived just on time. The children loved the lively performance and wonderful music. I’m sure that parents have had some requests to acquire these story books.

On Tuesday, October 23, 2007, in the late afternoon, just outside of our school, a power line came down.
Our staff followed all precautions to keep the students safe while emergency services personnel worked to rectify the problem.
We would like to thank parents for their cooperation in picking up their children outside of the school, as required by the emergency services personnel on site.
Thank you to Mark Davidson (Corey and Daniel’s dad) for providing us with the photo.

Parents may be aware of the recent concerns about high lead levels in the water of some schools and daycares. A new protocol is required of schools that includes weekly flushing of the water from the taps and yearly testing of the water.
We are happy to share with our parents that we are following these protocols and that the recent water testing results showed that there is no problem with our water!

The grade 6 class is already anxiously awaiting their trip to Quebec City. Fundraising for this great adventure is underway and our Halloween Movie Night raised $700.00 towards our trip. We plan to focus our energy on our upcoming bake sale on Friday, November 9. Come one, come all!

On Halloween, Laurel Academy students visited 33 Division, just next door. The staff there had prepared a wonderful “haunted house”, and there were more than a few playful shrieks heard from inside! One of the officers spoke to the children about Halloween safety, reminding them to walk well away from the road, not to eat anything untiil their parents inspect it, and to stay in areas they’re familiar with. Afterwards, the children were given loot bags full of treats, colouring activities, and a reflective band to wear while trick-or-treating.
Laurel Academy staff and students would like to express a sincere thanks to the staff at 33 Division who made this visit lots of fun!
