On Feb 21, the grade 6 class travelled bravely to the Armenian Community Centre to play in the under 12 basketball tournament. Our first game against Leo Baek was a tough one, but the Lynx played their hearts out, Unfortunately we lost the game 22-2. Luckilly Coach Nathan encouraged them and told the team, “I have seen you guys play much better than this and I believe you need to keep trying and not give up on this tournament.” The Laurel Lynx listened carefully to his words and Azayah, Jakob, Paige, Thomas, Veronica, Corey, Peter, Michael, Patrick, Nicole and Kevin scored and scored. For the third game it was all net for the Lynx and they won the last game 22-8. Congratulations to everybody on the team and a big thank you to Coach Nathan

The grades 3 - 6 classes took a trip back in time on Monday, October 22, when they visited Black Creek Pioneer Village. The grades 3, 4 and 5 classes experienced what it was like to be a child in Upper Canada in the 1800’s, by doing pioneer chores. They teased, carded and spun wool, made rag rugs, baked, washed dishes (yes, it’s true, parents!) and carried buckets of water. In the wood shop, they made wooden spoons, drilled holes, and used a weaving loom.

The grade six class supplemented their study of the Rebellions of 1837 with a mock trial and debate. They also visited the various buildings and talked about the issues and concerns of Upper Canadians in the early 1800’s.

The children learned a lot about the lives of pioneer children and adults, and I think, learned to appreciate hot running water and microwave ovens!

Students from Preschool to grade six enjoyed various Halloween activities this year. It started with a spooky movie night to raise funds for the grade six trip to Quebec. The night was a big success! The children also picked out pumpkins at Forsythe Family Farms or at Longo’s, and then carved or decorated them. On the 31st the students were invited to the local police station, 33 Division, to parade their costumes, visit their haunted house, and listen to a talk on Halloween safety. The children also enjoyed their classroom parties, eating tons of junk and playing Halloween games such as Spider Toss, Freeze Dance, and the dreaded Dare Game. Thanks to parents for the delicious donations of treats! Now it’s time to take down the spooky decorations until next year. You know, no matter how thorough you think you’re being in taking down the decorations, you invariably find something covered in fake spiderwebs three months after Halloween is over!
