Wow! Summer is over and the first week of school has ended. Time flies doesn’t it? The grade one students seem excited to be back and ready to work. We have almost completed our testing and have already had our first spelling lesson! The students seem to be coping well and adjusting to the many changes they face coming out of kindergarten and into grade one. They are most excited about having a desk of their own to fill with interesting things. We are all looking forward to an exciting year! Welcome back!

Students from Preschool to grade six enjoyed various Halloween activities this year. It started with a spooky movie night to raise funds for the grade six trip to Quebec. The night was a big success! The children also picked out pumpkins at Forsythe Family Farms or at Longo’s, and then carved or decorated them. On the 31st the students were invited to the local police station, 33 Division, to parade their costumes, visit their haunted house, and listen to a talk on Halloween safety. The children also enjoyed their classroom parties, eating tons of junk and playing Halloween games such as Spider Toss, Freeze Dance, and the dreaded Dare Game. Thanks to parents for the delicious donations of treats! Now it’s time to take down the spooky decorations until next year. You know, no matter how thorough you think you’re being in taking down the decorations, you invariably find something covered in fake spiderwebs three months after Halloween is over!

What a wonderful first week we had in our grade one class! The children were all eager to have their own desks, lockers, and pencil cases. They have officially stepped into the “big league”. I was pleasantly surprised at their willingness to get new books and actually do some schoolwork! I hope to see all of you out for Curriculum Night and the school BBQ. I am looking forward to a fabulous year with the grade ones!
