The grades 3 - 6 classes took a trip back in time on Monday, October 22, when they visited Black Creek Pioneer Village. The grades 3, 4 and 5 classes experienced what it was like to be a child in Upper Canada in the 1800’s, by doing pioneer chores. They teased, carded and spun wool, made rag rugs, baked, washed dishes (yes, it’s true, parents!) and carried buckets of water. In the wood shop, they made wooden spoons, drilled holes, and used a weaving loom.

The grade six class supplemented their study of the Rebellions of 1837 with a mock trial and debate. They also visited the various buildings and talked about the issues and concerns of Upper Canadians in the early 1800’s.

The children learned a lot about the lives of pioneer children and adults, and I think, learned to appreciate hot running water and microwave ovens!

Grade 4/5 Students Capture Time in a Toilet Roll

Posted in Grade 5, Grade 4 at 7:55 pm by staff

Welcome back!  On the first day back, Ms. Perry’s grade 4 and 5 students marked the occasion by making time capsules as mementos of their 2007-2008 school year.  Each student jotted down his/her five goals for the school year, as well as ten lifetime goals.  Some were as practical as winning the lottery, and some were as lofty as finding a cure for cancer.  They also made a list of their current favourites, and we measured and marked their height on a piece of ribbon.  A photo completed the package, and all of these components were tucked into a decorated toilet roll.  The time capsules will be opened at the end of the school year.  Students and their parents will enjoy seeing how each child has changed and grown, and they will also be gratified by seeing how many of their goals they have reached.  Have a wonderful school year, everybody!
